Hurston Ridge Double Stone Row

This site is featured on the Warren House Inn: Fernworthy and Grey Wethers walk. These photos are of Hurston Ridge double stone row (SX67298249 Butler Vol. 2. Map 25; 9). This impressive site is one of the best preserved double stone rows on Dartmoor. At the top of the stone row is a cairn with a large menhir, the row descends the hill with 49 pairs of stones to a terminating slab. A few of the double stone rows follow this basic structure with a cairn at the top and a terminating slab at the bottom but despite claims by some authors most of the double rows do not follow this layout. A number of the stones were restored to their original sockets. A broken hand axe was discovered in the pit in which one of the stones had stood near to the menhir next to the cairn.

The first photograph here is of the Heath Stone (SX67128375) on the edge of Fernworthy Forest. The last two photos are of hut circles (SX67058415) on the edge of Fernworthy Reservoir near the dam. The photo before these is of the King's Oven Cairn (SX67158129) near Warren House Inn.
